There are many reasons why dog patrols are so effective. Dogs are fast, they have a phenomenal sense of smell and they can get into places and over fences where a man cannot follow. In other words, a criminal knows when being chased by a dog that there is nowhere to hide. Dogs and their handlers form working partnerships over many years of training and each can respond to the slightest signal from the other.
